She has been running in the field the past few weeks chasing rabbits and tracking who knows what other scents. I didn't really like it too much but she is a beagle and her nose can't resist a good smell! She always comes home hot, exhausted and full of ticks (gross).
So Tuesday I kept her tied outside and then brought her in that afternoon just to give her a break. It was about 90 outside anyway so she needed to just chill for a day. She paced around and barked all day...she didn't like it one bit. After dinner we let her out and she took off for the tall grass. I had my camera out snapping a few pictures of Emma in her glory...
see her tail?

About 15 minutes later I noticed her sitting in the yard with her front paw cocked out to the side. I went to check on her and it was very sore. It felt funny too so I figured it was dislocated at her "knee". Called the vet and had to wait for them to return my call. Emma was laying down at this point, unable to walk. While waiting I noticed her back leg was also sore and both were starting to swell. Something wasn't right. Called the vet wanting to bring her in but they were booked for the night. Great.
The timing was bad too...Kevin had left to go to a meeting so I was by myself trying to figure out what to do. The vet recommended taking her to the emergency hospital. So I had to carry her to the car and headed out around 8pm.
They confirmed that she had been bitten by a snake not once but twice (front and back paw). {{shudder}} It was awful...she had to stay overnight with antibiotics and fluids through an IV.
The next morning they advised taking her to her regular vet for observation and more IV fluids since she wasn't eating or drinking. She ended up spending the night there too.
This morning the vet said she was a little more alert but not eating or drinking well. She wanted to keep her there longer but I pushed for her to come home because I knew she would be more comfortable here.
When I picked her up this morning the dr. said she could walk but very slowly and had trouble with steps. But when I got Emma to the car she jumped inside when I opened the door...she was ready to get away from there!
Once we got home she was wagging her tail!
She looks so pitiful but I know she is happy to be here. But she wags her tail when we talk to her and she is eating and drinking so I think she'll slowly start feeling better. This has been a rough few days though...

swollen front foot...

that's just gross...

Outside a little later...she perked up a little and seemed happy to sit in the sun for a bit :) Her right leg is swollen and I have to take her back tomorrow to take the IV catheter out of her left leg.
